Why Weight Management for Kids Needs a Family Approach
Written by Paediatric Exercise Physiologist, Ben Hall – Ocean Kids Health

We hear a lot about the rising rates of childhood obesity – and it’s true, the numbers are concerning. But what we don’t hear often enough is how we can make a difference in a way that’s safe, supportive, and long-lasting.
As a Paediatric Exercise Physiologist, I work with children every day who are navigating health, weight, and self-confidence challenges. One thing is crystal clear: kids don’t make these changes alone – families do.
It’s Not Just About the Child
When we talk about “weight management” for kids, it can be easy to place all the attention (and pressure) on the child. But in reality, a child’s habits are shaped by their surroundings — the food at home, the activities they do (or don’t do), the role models they see, and the routines their family keeps.
That’s why a family approach works best.
- It avoids singling out a child in a way that can affect their self-esteem.
- It creates shared goals and teamwork.
- It ensures that healthy changes become part of the household culture — not just a short-term fix.

Movement is More Than “Exercise”
One of the biggest myths is that weight management means running laps or signing up for endless sports. In reality, it’s about finding enjoyable, age-appropriate movement that a child actually wants to do.
For some families, that might be:
- Playing active games together in the backyard.
- Walking or riding to school.
- Joining a fun dance or swimming class.
- Doing “family challenges” like weekend park adventures.
As Exercise Physiologists, we know that movement is medicine — but it needs to be the right dose, at the right intensity, and delivered in a way that builds confidence and skill.
Nutrition, Sleep & Mindset Matter Too
Exercise is one part of the puzzle. Kids also need:
- Balanced, nourishing food (without strict dieting rules).
- Regular sleep routines that support energy and mood.
- Encouragement and positivity rather than criticism or guilt.
This is where working alongside GPs, dietitians, psychologists, and other allied health professionals can create a strong support network. In some cases, a GP referral can also help families access Medicare or private health rebates for Exercise Physiology services.

The Goal is Health, Not Just a Number
The aim isn’t to create the “perfect weight” — it’s to help kids feel stronger, move better, have more energy, and build a lifelong positive relationship with activity and food.
When families approach this journey together, the impact goes far beyond the child. Parents often find themselves moving more, eating better, and feeling healthier too.
