What is Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI)?
Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) is a therapeutic technique used to support children with motor delays. The goal of DMI is to provoke specific motor reactions through targeted, dynamic exercises delivered by our trained therapists. DMI is designed to stimulate neuroplasticity – encouraging the brain to form new neural connections that support the acquisition of motor milestones e.g. crawling or walking.
How Does DMI Work?
At Ocean Kids, your therapist will first assess your child’s movement abilities and identify any areas of motor delay. From there, we select developmentally appropriate exercises that challenge the child’s motor system through graded movement experiences, such as:
- Movements against gravity
- Transitions like sitting to standing
- Tasks that challenge postural control, strength, and coordination e.g. walking
- Each session is tailored to your child’s needs and adjusted as they progress.
DMI at Ocean Kids
We love incorporating DMI techniques into our therapy—whether during regular weekly sessions, intensive programs, or our popular 2-week DMI blocks, where we help your child for 1 hour each day. Many of our experienced team have completed formal DMI training, and we’re excited to continue offering this intervention as part of our holistic, child-centred approach to therapy.
